Matthias Kaiser
Matthias Kaiser is a Vienna-based potter whose handmade work balances intent and accident. He studied at Parsons in New York and at Vienna's University of Applied Arts, apprenticed with two Japanese master potters in Seto and Karatsu, spent two years traveling the Indian subcontinent, and for 13 years was the akhavan of an Iranian dervish. His shapes are informed by the Bauhaus movement, modernist architecture and contemporary art, among other influences. The combination of unrefined clays and ash glazes with gilded surfaces gives his pieces a primitive yet elegant quality.
